For one block you need:

5 inch square

1 strip, 1 inch x 2 3/4 inch

1 strip, 1 inch x 2 1/2 inch

1. From the 5 inch block cut a strip 2 1/4 inch (left)

Cut the remaining piece in half horizontal =

2 Rectangles, 2 1/2 x 2 3/4 inch

2. Sew the long 1 inch strip to the bottom of one rectangle and the shorter strip to the left side of the other rectangle. Press the seams away from the strips.

3. Cut the shorter strip back to 3/4 inch width.

You can now see a 1/2 inch width from topside.

4. This is the point were you can switch one unit if desired.

Sew the two "stripped" units together and take care that the left edge turns out straight. The right edge may have different lengths. Press the seam into the strip.

5. Sew the joined units to the remaining piece. Press seam to the single unit.

6. Measure first the framed square to be 2 1/4 inch, correct if necessary. Then trim the block to 4 1/2 inch.

7. The block is ready to be sewn into your quilt.
