Engel - Bee

ENGERL AND ONE BENGERL

As we decided to do a challenge and the theme Engerl/Vienna I immediately knew how my quilt should look. A centerpiece surrounded by flying angels.

First I thought of a Mariner's compass, but seeing a Mandala in a book, the pattern for the center was clear. For the wheel I handdyed 12 different shades of red and pieced the strips like a Bargello. The pattern for the flying geese I draw and designed on paper and sewed them by paperpiecing. For the background I used one piece of fabric and worked with reverse-applique.

The red and white colors show the flagcolors from Austria and Vienna.

Kaija-Liisa called me once "whirly", so there is a part of my person also involved. The angelfabric I received two years ago through a christmasgame on another list from Sherry Moore, who had participiated in our angelblock swap in the beginning of our Engerl list. So I thought this fabric would be appropiate to use. The blue fabric simply symbolizes the sky. The alternating geese are solid white and I'm looking forward to get them signed by our Engerls at the Vienna meeting.

The wheel and the geese are handquilted in the ditch and in the corners I quilted an angelpattern, also by hand.
